Re-posted to ABratt’s blogs 11-3-11 in an effort to debunk Christian Fundamentalist’s claims that the Founding Fathers created an American-Christian Nation.
Thomas Jefferson, probably the most influential of all the Founding Fathers, said:
“…Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity [uniformity of belief concerning Christianity]. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth.”
(Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782; from George Seldes, ed., The Great Quotations, Secaucus, New Jersey: Citadel Press, 1983, p. 363.)”
Christian-Right Pseudo-historian David Barton, for one, claims the Founding Fathers created a “Christian Nation.” Nonsense, Barton!!
